The Leica DISTO X1 Point it at a surface, press the button, read the number. The X1 measures distances up to 100 metres to 1.5mm accuracy, working on its own without anyone at the other end. It is quick to use, the display is easy to read, and it fits in a jacket pocket. The casing is rated IP65, which means fully sealed against dust and protected against water jets. You can use it in a first-fix environment where there is plaster dust in the air, or on a job where things get wet, and it keeps working. When it needs cleaning, you rinse it. The corner guards have been through a 2-metre drop test, so dropping it on a hard floor is not the end of the world. What it calculates Beyond straight distances, the X1 handles area, volume and net wall area. The area function takes two measurements and multiplies them. Volume takes three. The painter function is the one tradespeople tend to use most when pricing up work - you measure along each wall, then tell the device to subtract the window or the door, and carry on. At the end it shows you the total paintable or plasterable area.
