How does it work? The way K1 biological materials work is important because a delicate ecological system naturally develops bacteria that participate in the nitrification process. K1 material provides maximum active surface area for bacteria to colonize, more than other types of supports. This is the process that removes harmful ammonia and nitrite from water. How is it different from other materials? As the K1 moves inside the filter it causes the old dead bacteria to displace. This leaves room for younger, heavier bacteria to colonize quickly. Inside the wheel is a surface that allows colonies of bacteria to follow their life cycle naturally, maturing, dying, and then feeding the last stages of nitrification. K1 has been designed to offer the best for both young and old bacterial colonies. What is meant by "self-cleaning"? Unlike foam or other forms of static filtering, the K1 is designed to move freely within your filter. The constant chaotic movement of the pump air causes the materials to be automatically cleaned and thus not require as much maintenance. This allows the filter to reach optimum efficiency without the hassle of having to clean it periodically, avoiding unnecessary loss of bacteria within the filter. 50 liters of K1 will take care of up to 250 grams of food per day.
