Product Description Product: Artichoke Leaf Powder Latin Name: Cynara cardunculus var. scolymus Plant Family: Asteraceae Other Names: Globe Artichoke, Green Artichoke, French Artichoke, Alcachofra, Alcachofera, Artichaut, Tyosen-azami, Alcachofa, Alcaucil, Artichaut Commun, Artischocke, Cardo, Cardo de Comer, Cardon d'Espagne, Cardoon, Garden Artichoke, Gemuseartischocke, Kardone, Tyosen-Azami. & Heartichoke. Description: This native of the Mediterranean have similar characteristics to the thistle, it is a tall plant with a growing habit of 1–1.5 metres in height with a width of up to 1 metre. The leaves are arching, deeply lobed, silvery grey-green and between 50–82 cm long. The flowers are approximately 8–15cm in diameter with numerous triangular ‘scales’ which are green in colour with a reddish-purple tint, the scales are topped with many fine stamens that are lilac-purple in colour. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans all grew the artichoke and used it as food and as medicine, believing it to have a particular affinity with the liver.
