The Italian Royal Navy, thanks to the successes achieved during the First World War, developed several underwater and surface assault vehicles. The Modified Tourism Speedboat (M.T.M.) was designed to ensure an approach to the target to be hit quickly and not easily identified by enemy forces. Completed the approach and joined near the target, the pilot blocked the rudder to keep the course and cast the boat at high speed at it. The pilot, positioned at the stern, is expelled from the boat at a safe distance, before the collision. The high-potential explosive charge positioned at the front of the Barchino detonated at the time of impact against the target. We can recall the sinking by the assault group commanded by Luigi Faggioni of the heavy cruiser of the British Royal Navy HMS York in Suda in March 1941, as the most successful action of the Italian Royal Navy in the use of the "Barchino".
