Hosta 'Silly String' is a distinctive and award-winning variety of plantain lily, celebrated for its striking blue-green foliage and elegant growth habit. With long, narrow, wavy-edged leaves, this compact hosta adds a sense of texture and movement to borders, containers, or shaded garden corners. In summer, it produces upright spikes of pale purple flowers that contrast gently with the foliage. This standout variety earned second place in the 2025 RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year competition. Perfect for pairing with broad-leaved hostas or delicate ferns, it also makes a great companion to the golden-leaved Hosta ‘Party Streamers’ for a colourful and textured display. Reaching a mature height and spread of around 30cm (12in), this hardy perennial suits small garden spaces and pots. Growing Advice: Plant in dappled shade or full sun with consistently moist, well-drained soil. Prior to planting, enrich the soil with compost or a balanced fertiliser to encourage strong growth. For containers, use a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Aftercare: In autumn, remove faded foliage and apply a generous mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base.
