Hopi Black Dye Sunflower (Helianthus annuus), known to the Hopi people as Tceqa’ Qu’ Si, is a culturally significant heirloom variety traditionally grown for its distinctive black-shelled seeds. Unlike ornamental dark-petalled sunflowers, this variety produces classic bright yellow petals with large dark centres. The black seed husks contain natural pigments (anthocyanins) historically used to create rich dyes ranging from deep lavender and blue through to maroon and near black, depending on pH. Plants are vigorous and tall, commonly reaching 7–11ft in height in full sun. They are drought tolerant once established and highly attractive to bees, birds and beneficial insects. Originally collected in 1978 by Native Seeds/SEARCH from the Shungopavi village on the Hopi Reservation, this variety continues to be grown for dyeing, edible seeds, ornamental value and cultural preservation. Sow indoors March–April or direct sow after the last frost. Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Space generously and stake if growing in exposed areas.
