Better known by the common name Witch Hazel, Hamamelis Pallida are excellent shrubs for brightening up the winter garden. These flowering shrubs bloom from January to March, providing plenty of texture and colour interest when most garden plants are dormant. Lush green foliage emerges in spring, changing with the seasons to produce dramatic autumn colour before clusters of bright yellow, sweetly-scented flowers appear on bare twigs after Christmas. These hardy shrubs are easy to grow and demand very little maintenance to look their best. Water thoroughly after planting and once a week until well-established, after which they only need to be watered during particularly dry spells. Lightly prune in spring to tidy the shrub and remove any dead or damaged branches. Position your Witch Hazel plant in a sheltered spot that enjoys full or partial sun. Outdoor Witch Hazels prefer slightly acid soils that are moist but drain well. These striking winter plants are most often planted in flower beds and borders but grow well in pots too.
