- This set contains three plastic cards in grey, white and black. The cards are essential tools for digital photography because they all help to achieve perfect shots. This means that the white card is used to perform manual white balance to avoid unsightly colour cast.
- The grey card serves different purposes: it helps to measure the correct exposure in difficult light situations during manual white balance. It also serves as a reference card for colour matching when digitally post-processing photos. The black card is shown together with the white card to determine the contrast range of a motif.
- The automatic white balance of digital cameras does not deliver optimal results in every light situation. In addition, daylight or artificial light presets are set to specific colour temperatures that often do not correspond to the actual conditions. In both cases, you get shots with an unsightly colour cast.
- For this reason, you should always carry out a manual white balance, by matching the white balance of your camera exactly to the colour temperature of the ambient light. For this purpose, you take a format-filling reference shot of the white card on the basis of which the white balance of the camera is calibrated.
- The exposure meter of a digital camera is calibrated for subjects with an average brightness distribution. Subjects with a very one-sided brightness distribution can therefore easily mislead the exposure meter of a camera. In such a situation, it is recommended to carry out an exposure measurement and use the grey card as a reference.
