Description What is RFID? RFID, Radio Frequency Identification, is the technology that lets you simply wave your contactless payment card or identification card, passport or license in front of a nearby scanner instead of having to slide the magnetic strip through it. The electronic scanner sends a signal which is received by an antenna embedded into the card, which is connected to the card’s RFID chip, thus activating it. Most RFID systems are designed to work at short-range, typically a few inches. However, cards can be read at a metre or more away with powerful RFID readers by hackers. Thus, contactless cards are not secure. Unfortunately, criminals even with minimal technical skills can construct their own RFID readers with a few simple supplies. These devices can steal your private financial information quickly and silently, all the perpetrator needs to do is come near your wallet with the hidden card reader. They don’t even need to be in the line of sight of the card. You wouldn’t know it at all. RFID blocking systems vastly reduces the transmitted signal power of the reader, preventing the microchip in the RFID card from working. This ensures RFID card security. Essentially, RFID readers transmit signals which power the microchip in the card, the microchip in the card then powers up and send data back to the reader. This can be prevented by blocking the RFID signals. RFID blocking wallets or card holders work by blocking the electromagnetic field surrounding the RFID microchip. With the electromagnetic field blocked, they prevent hackers from receiving a signal from your RFID microchip.
