Product description
Fothergill’s Runner Bean ‘White Lady’ is a reliable, high‑yielding climbing bean producing elegant white flowers followed by long, tender, stringless pods. Bred for good pod set even in cooler or variable UK summers, this vigorous variety is ideal for trellises, wigwams, fences and growframes. Supplied as approximately 40 quality seeds, White Lady delivers abundant harvests for fresh eating, freezing and preserving. Growing Instructions (UK) Sowing Sow outdoors May–July where beans will crop; sow 4–5 cm deep. For earlier crops, sow under cover April–May then transplant after risk of frost. If soil is cool, soak seed 6–12 hours to aid germination. Germination typically 7–14 days. Spacing and support Sow two seeds per station, 25–30 cm apart; thin to the strongest seedling. Allow 45–60 cm between rows. Provide sturdy supports 1.8–2.4 m high (wigwam, poles or tall trellis). Position and soil Choose a sunny or lightly sheltered site in fertile, well‑drained soil. Work in garden compost or well‑rotted manure before planting for best yields. Care and feeding Water regularly during dry spells and mulch between rows to conserve moisture. Side‑dress with compost or a balanced organic feed once plants start to climb and again at first flowering. Pinch out only if height becomes unmanageable. Pests and disease Monitor for blackfly, slugs and seed weevil; pick off pests and encourage beneficial insects. Rotate crops annually to reduce disease risk. Harvest Harvest July–October as pods reach 15–30 cm and before seeds swell for best tenderness; pick regularly to encourage continued cropping. Pods freeze well for winter use.
