Product description
Product Description The Tiger 1’s initial designation was Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausführung H, as known as PzKpfw VI Ausf. H, when it was first deployed, it was classified with ordnance inventory designation Sd.Kfz. 182, only 1,347 were built between 1942 to 1945, it was known as “Tiger” tank by the Allied forces and was one of the most powerful tank’s they had ever encountered. Since it was first developed in late 1942, the Tiger tank had many improvement’s, almost happening once in every 3 months, at times vehicles differed from unit to unit. The Tiger 1’s development was split across four phases of variants - 1) Initial, 2) Early, 3) Mid and 4) Late production vehicles. Initial production Tiger 1’s were assigned to the 501st s.Pz.Abt (schwerer Panzer Abteilung - Heavy Tank Battalion) which was formed in 1942, the 501st was assigned to the 5th Panzer Army under the command of von Arnim, their units were deployed in Tunisia during Operation Torch. Before being assigned to Tunisia, these Initial production Tigers were meant to be used on the Eastern Front so the base colour of these Tanks was originally German grey colour (Dunkelgrau - RAL 7021) however at the last minute Nazi Ordnance decided to deploy these Tiger units into the Tunisia campaign. As a result, these Tank’s were re-painted overall with a coat of desert yellow/yellow brown colour (Gelb-braun - RAL 8000) the blending of the two paints created a much darker yellow tone overall. Grey-Green (Grau-Grun - RAL 7008) was used as a disruptive colour over this. Once they arrived in Tunisia, the Feifel air filter system and rear turret stowage bin’s were added, these additional accessories were painted with a much lighter desert yellow/brown colour (Braun - RAL 8020) together with the darker yellow coat, it shown a very high contrast even in black & white photos from many historical references. The 501st battalion had participated in several operations to halt the Allied advances, however many were lost while attempting to capture Beja. This particular example with turret number, “121” belonged to one of the two company commander’s Tigers, “11” and “21”. It has a unique stencil at the left side of the turret, ‘Alwin’ underneath the stencil was a hand-drawn Tiger which was the symbol of the 501st Battalion. This particular Tiger “121” suffered mine damage during the Operation Ox Head - The Battle for Sidi Nsir/Battle for Hunts Gap and nearly survived till the end of the Tunisian campaign.
