Introduced to the Uk. around 1845 this native of the Himalayas and China has long been cultivated in Japan where it is still highly prized as a plant for the high quality paper it produces, which is used for Japanese currency. I am sure the Japanese also enjoy it as a wonderful ornamental garden shrub! To my mind, as an ornamental garden plant, Edgeworthia chrysantha is one of the finest winter flowering shrubs. During summer and autumn this plant is, in truth, just another, rather odd looking, green shrub, however in winter it is a thing of great beauty and pleasure.
