A2 stainless steel split lock spring washer, manufactured to the DIN 127, Type B dimensional standard. Pressed from austenitic A2 (304-grade) stainless steel and cold-formed into a helical coil with two flat, square-cut ends, the washer combines spring tension with a mechanical bite to keep nuts and bolts tight under vibration, repeated movement and thermal cycling. DIN 127 was formally withdrawn from the current German DIN catalogue in the early 1990s, but the Type B (square-end) profile remains the de facto industry reference for split lock washer dimensions and continues to be manufactured and stocked worldwide to the same sizing. When the washer is compressed flat under a tightened fastener, the coiled ring stores spring energy and continues pushing back against the bearing face, helping to maintain clamping tension as a joint beds in or experiences light-to-moderate vibration. The sharp, square-cut ends also key very slightly into the mating surfaces, adding mechanical resistance to counter-rotation on top of the spring action. These washers are manufactured from A2 (also widely known as 18-8 or grade 304) austenitic stainless steel, an alloy of roughly 17.5-19.5% chromium and 8-10.5% nickel that gives excellent resistance to rust and general corrosion in indoor, outdoor and freshwater environments. For coastal, marine, swimming pool or other high-chloride settings, A2 stainless is prone to chloride pitting over time - an A4 (316-grade) stainless washer offers superior resistance in those conditions. When pairing with stainless steel bolts and nuts, a light anti-seize or lubricant on the threads is worth applying, as stainless-on-stainless fastenings are prone to thread galling (cold welding) if tightened dry.
