Easy Planting for Strong Summer Growth Plant the tubers after the last frost in a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, free-draining soil. Place them 10–15 cm deep with the old stem facing upwards, spacing plants 45–60 cm apart. Water lightly at first, then increase watering once shoots appear. Support taller varieties and lift the tubers before severe winter frost.
