An easy to grow and low maintenance shrub, with beetroot coloured leaves that are almost translucent on a sunny day. In midsummer you will see feathery blooms that are stunning to look at, and by Autumn the leaves will have turned to a stunning coppery colour Grow the Smoke Bush in a moderately fertile, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade, plants are generally unfussy and a low maintenance choice of shrub for the garden. Your Smoke Bush will require little pruning other than to maintain its shape, and to remove any dead, diseased or damaged growth. Alternatively, to produce larger, showier foliage, you can cut back stems during spring to within 2 or 3 buds of the base. After pruning, mulch the base of your plants with a few inches of well-rotted compost or manure.
