Clematis ‘Niobe’ brings a rich, dramatic colour palette to the garden with its velvety ruby-red blooms that deepen to a deep wine-red as they mature. Each star-shaped flower spans up to 15cm (6in) and features striking greenish-yellow stamens for contrast. Flowering from late spring to autumn, this compact, hardy perennial climber offers months of vibrant colour. A smaller variety, Clematis ‘Niobe’ is ideal for patio containers, small trellises, and obelisks, or it can be grown at the back of borders to add height and interest. It is equally suited to covering walls, fences, or arches when trained onto a support. Plant in a sunny or semi-shaded position with moist, fertile, well-drained soil. For best results, position the top of the rootball 7.5cm (3in) below soil level to promote healthy shoot growth. Use a soil-based compost like John Innes No.3 for containers. Avoid soils that are overly wet or dry. Pruning group 2: In early spring, remove dead or damaged stems and prune the rest back to a pair of strong buds. Mulch around the base with well-rotted manure or compost in spring, and feed and water regularly throughout the growing season to promote healthy growth and flowering.
