These ollas (pronounced Oh-yah) are made of a natural terracotta. They are a simple and effective irrigation system that has been used for 1000's of years. Simply bury the terracotta pot, leaving the top just above the surface. Keep topped up with water, and the water will trickle down to the roots as and when the plant needs it. If the soil is damp enough, the water stays in the olla. When the soil is dry, it causes the water to be pulled out by osmosis, and delivers it efficiently to the roots. Simple and clever!
