A HG pin must be used with every new closure of an original Shimano chain. Due to the narrow width of the Shimano chains in combination with the high gearing precision, the use of the old standard rivets is not permitted and very dangerous because of the risk of chain tear. The HG pin or chain rivet pin has a one-sided sharp collar and sits almost flat on the chain collar. The side to be pressed does not possess this when unused and automatically cranks by breaking off the excess part also widens flat with a sharp collar.
