Product description
Number Ten Downing Street Brass Lion's Head Door Knocker This majestic lion head door knocker is a classic British image renowned throughout the world. A good and heavy knocker made of solid brass and weighing approximately 1½ kg. Welcome your visitors in style with this Victorian design made using traditional techniques. Molten brass is poured into sand moulds made using an antique pattern. This produces an authentic antique fiinish which is then hand polished. Unlacquered finish. Dimensions: Total height: 230mm (9") Height of head: 145mm (5¾") Width: 115mm (4½") Depth: 50mm (2") out from the door Striking plate diameter: 48mm (2") Three fixing bolts are included which go through your door and screw into the rear of the knocker and striking plate. The top two fixing holes are 120mm (4¾“) approx apart. The bottom two holes are spaced 70mm (2¾") approx apart (centre to centre). Supplied bolts are suitable for doors up to 6cm thick and are easily cut to fit your door. How they are made Sand casting is a traditional foundry skill. Molten brass is poured into sand moulds formed using an antique pattern. When the brass is cool, the casts are hand-finished and polished. This makes an authentic antique style. How to care for your brass door knocker Your brass door knocker will develop a mature and mellow patina over time. Many people love this traditional look, but if you feel the brass is getting dirty and covered in grime then you can clean your knocker with lukewarm soapy water and a soft brush or cloth. Avoid using abrasive materials as they can scratch the surface of the brass. For a more radiant sheen, use a good quality brass polish.
