Originally, the Himalayan singing bowls were used as everyday utensils. In the past, shaman blacksmiths travelled through the Himalayas, and forged the utensils the locals needed (singing bowls). The beautiful sound may come from knowledge of the harmonisation of the individual metals (which, as in alchemy, represent different aspects and elements). A harmony of the different elements was achieved when the alloy produced a nice sound when hit. This corresponds to the ideal image of the Buddhist doctrine of balance and harmony.
