The BPS Bio glass Rings are made of non-toxic. inert materials that promote bacterial growth. And made of very porous ceramic for maximum surface area to allow a large colonies of beneficial bacteria. they are very porous. The hollow design effectively distributes the flow of water and allows massive colonies of bacteria to grow inside of each ring. The surface areas are large both internally and externally and make the perfect environment for beneficial bacteria that remove the ammonia and nitrite from aquarium water. If your aquarium is new, you should wait about a month until the colonies of bacteria necessary for maintaining the water in good condition form (the nitrogen cycle).
