This hardy annual legume prefers sandy soils with a pH of up to 8, and grows a taproot that allows it to mine for minerals not available to shallow-rooted plants. Its association with Rhizobium bacteria helps it to fix nitrogen from the air. Lupins have a 25 percent higher free nitrogen fixation rate than clovers and a 28 percent higher fixation rate than peas and beans. Because of these two characteristics, it can be used as a soil-building green manure, aerating heavy soils and increasing the ability of light soils to hold more moisture due to the increase in organic matter.
