• The dun trout fly is an excellent choice for your fly box, great for trout and grayling. The Dun Fly is really an early season fly and best fished perhaps in spring to early summer.
• The Greenwell Glory Trout Fly is one of the most famous of all British trout flies, this pattern was first tied as a wet-fly in the mid-nineteenth century. Developed for fishing on the River Tweed, it is named after a certain Canon Greenwell, and even after one hundred and fifty years it still makes a very good imitation of all the olive upwings. Today, the Greenwell’s Glory is tied in a variety of forms, from the original winged wet-fly to a spider, a nymph and, as here, a split winged dry-fly. Although some modern commercial versions use olive floss for the body, the original used yellow silk, well-waxed to produce an olive hue.
• The black gnat dry fly is an excellent trout fly to use when any small dark or black insects or the real flies are on the water. Clouds of black gnats can often be seen hovering over the water and it is inevitable that some of these will fall into the water, thus becoming a food source for the trout. Black gnat flies are a delicacy to all trout species. Fish static or on a floating line with a varied retrieve, try it when there does not appear to be a surface action, as it will be the one the trout are looking to see float by.The fly is tied to represent a terrestrial insect rather than one of aquatic origin.
