The beauty of many narrow railways is that they can be erected in a matter of weeks, allowing changes to lines or infrastructure - or moving the entire railway in the case of wartime trench railway systems - with little or no foresight. As a result, many of the buildings used on narrow lines were relatively simple in concept and this shaft engine shed testifies to that, with its fluted sides and roof and two bolted on doors, this would be a quick and cheap structure to build - and also dismantle again if the requirement ever arose - while still providing much needed shelter for the locomotives it would provide.
