Optical distribution by means of optical fiber or optical fibre offers many advantages over conventional technologies. Attenuation is hardly present in the cable, so that kilometres of cable paths are possible without an amplifier. The optical distribution is therefore very attractive on longer cable paths. Optical cables are extremely space-saving, a 3 mm fibre optic cable replaces at least 4 coaxial cables and is also more flexible.
