The outward opening of the stirrup arm aids in the release of the foot in case of emergency. The opening of the lock-and-release mechanism, activated by force, is located one centimeter higher from the tread. This is to ensure both that the foot cannot slip sideways by mistake and to prevent sand and dirt from delaying the release action of the arm in an emergency.
