This is the first full-length recording on which this internationally renowned African-American a cappella quintet,now in its 39th year,has recorded with a backing band(piano/bass/drums).This is the group's first album in six years.On this live 2-CD set,the members of Sweet Honey celebrate many of the songs that have influenced the jazzier aspects of their repertoire of vocal improvisations,blues,folk,spirituals,traditional gospel hymns,rap,reggae,African chants,Hip Hop,and ancient lullabies.As a group and in solo spotlights,Sweet Honey performs songs on this set previously sung,and in some cases written,by some of the great female African-American vocalists who have preceded them,including Abbey Lincoln,Odetta,Nina Simone,Billie Holiday,and Miriam Makeba.The group puts its distinctive vocal imprint on such popular standards as Love Me or Leave Me,If I Should Lose You,Feeling Good,and Wild is the Wind,traditional African-derived material(Sabumoya,Shuku Shuku,Makeba's 1967 hit Pata Pata),the bawdy See Line Woman and bluesy Trouble in Mind.This set will be serviced to media during February Black History Month a perfect opportunity for advance publicity.The group,which has toured from Africa to China to the British Isles,will perform at The Barbican Centre in London on March 23.Sweet Honey's previous CD for Appleseed,2007's Experience ...101(APR CD 1104,UPC 611587110428)was a Grammy nominee,their second nomination in a career that includes numerous awards and more than 20 albums.
