Product description
CREATE A BEAUTIFUL EVERGREEN HEDGE Create a lush, evergreen garden boundary with our Cherry Laurel Plants (Prunus laurocerasus). Supplied as a set of 6 healthy plants in 13cm pots, each approximately 30–35cm tall, these vigorous Common Laurel plants are an excellent choice for establishing a dense, attractive and easy-to-maintain hedge. PLANT HIGHLIGHTS & BENEFITS Cherry Laurel is one of the most popular evergreen hedging plants, prized for its large, glossy green leaves and vigorous growth. Unlike deciduous hedging that loses its leaves during winter, Prunus Cherry Laurel retains its foliage throughout the year, helping provide continuous screening, structure and privacy. Once established, Prunus laurocerasus can develop into a substantial, dense hedge and responds extremely well to regular pruning. This makes Cherry Laurel plants particularly useful for garden boundaries, privacy screening, covering fences, dividing areas of the garden and creating a greener alternative to traditional fencing. Established plants can produce attractive clusters of small white flowers during spring, which can attract pollinating insects. These may be followed by berries that ripen from green through red to dark purple-black later in the season. Please note: The berries, leaves and other parts of Cherry Laurel are harmful if eaten. PLANTING YOUR CHERRY LAUREL HEDGE For a hedge that fills out relatively quickly, we recommend planting your Common Laurel plants approximately 40cm apart. At this spacing, a pack of six plants can be used to plant approximately 2.4 metres of hedging. CREATING A HEDGE ON A BUDGET If you are creating a longer hedge on a budget, your Cherry Laurel plants can be positioned further apart. Spacing them approximately 50–60cm or more apart reduces the number of plants required and allows each pack to cover a greater distance. The plants will simply take longer to grow together and form a continuous dense hedge. Dig a planting hole large enough to comfortably accommodate the root ball. Position each plant at approximately the same depth it was growing in its pot, backfill with soil, gently firm around the roots and water thoroughly after planting. CHERRY LAUREL CARE GUIDE Position: Cherry Laurel is highly adaptable and can be grown in full sun or partial shade and will also tolerate more shaded positions. Soil: Plant into reasonably fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid locations that remain severely waterlogged for prolonged periods. Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season while your Cherry Laurel plants establish, particularly during warm or dry weather. Once established, the hedge generally requires considerably less attention. Feeding: Applying a general-purpose fertiliser during spring can encourage strong, healthy new growth. Adding a layer of mulch around the base of the plants can also help retain moisture and suppress weeds. WHEN & HOW TO PRUNE Cherry English Laurels respond extremely well to pruning. Lightly trimming young plants encourages branching and can help develop a thicker, bushier hedge rather than allowing the plants to become tall and narrow. A light prune in late spring or early summer can be used to maintain shape and encourage dense growth. A more substantial trim can be carried out later in summer if required to control the hedge's height and width. For the neatest appearance, established Prunus laurocerasus can be cut using secateurs or hedge shears. Because Cherry Laurel has relatively large leaves, hand pruning can provide a particularly clean finish by avoiding partially cut leaves. FAST GROWING EVERGREEN GREAT FOR PRIVACY With its vigorous growth, evergreen foliage, excellent screening ability and straightforward maintenance, Common Laurel is an excellent choice for creating a substantial living boundary that becomes denser and more impressive as it matures.
