Product description - The Japanese Puzzle Box is a traditional wooden Japanese secret box that originated in the 1800’s during the ‘Samurai’ era. - The box can only be opened through a series of complex sliding movements that must be made in the right order otherwise the secret box won’t open! - The surface of the box is covered with Yosegi (meaning gathered wood), a traditionalJapanese wooden mosaic veneer which often requires more than 40 different varieties of wood to create. - Each box is totally handmade in the Hakone region of Japan at the foot of Mount Fujiby only a handful of highly skilled Japanese craftsmen. - The word 'sun' is a traditional Japanese unit of measurement with one sun being 3.03 cm. - In describing Japanese Puzzle boxes, the number of 'suns' denote the longest measurement of the box.2 'sun' would therefore be 6.06 cm, 3'sun' would be 9.09 cm etc. - This box is cellophane wrapped and comes with a handwritten Japanese calligraphy label. Why not keep it inside the box for authenticity? - Yosegi technique is designated as the traditional handcraft by The Ministry of International Trade and Industry, May 1984. - The Japanese Puzzle Box is a winner of the Regional (Great Britain) Prize in the Souvenirs of Japan Contest 2008 by The Ministry of Japan Tourism Agency.
