• CIRCLIPS- Retaining rings and snap rings are fasteners that grasp elements or installations onto a shaft or in a dwelling/bore when assembled in a groove. Once it’s fixed, the exposed piece functions as a shoulder which holds the particular element or installation.

• INSTALATION- Use snap ring pliers when installing the ring inside in a bore, you pull the ends apart and release it onto the circlip’s groove in the bore. Ideally, the size of the section of a circlip is larger than the depth of the groove to which it is installed. This makes a portion of the C-clip remain exposed to act as a shoulder for retaining the specific components or assembly either inside a housing or on the shaft.

Retainer Rings Retaining rings are metal fasteners that fit into a groove on a shaft or in a housing or bore to provide a shoulder that holds an assembly in place. The purpose of a Retaining Ring is to act as a shoulder to stop the sub-component or assemblies coming off the shaft or housing bore, especially in mechanical power transmission assemblies. A snap ring is a strong, thin, C-shaped metallic ring that works as a retaining fastener on shafts and inside circular bores to retain assembly parts. However, unlike a nut or bolt that threads onto a piece, a snap ring or C-clip snaps into a circular groove inside a bore housing or on the shaft. That is why it is called a snap ring because it has high tensile strength that makes it snap into the radial groove and stay in place. Once the ring fastener sits properly in the groove, part of its circumference sticks out to form a shoulder that secures the assemblies inside the housing or onto the shaft.
